Hmmm, I hope it wasn't me :)

In the developing 'drama' behind this entry, I recieved the following email from Computer Services on campus.

Internet access from the dorms

If you are using a file sharing program (kazaa, WinMX, LimeWare, etc), PLEASE shut off the sharing of your directories and files. The internet link is becoming saturated causing the internet to become very slow. If you are not sure if you are sharing files, please ask a friend to check your settings. If your computer is found to be sharing files and causing saturation, your internet access will be temporally disabled. If you have questions, please call us at 7289.

Thanks in advance!!!

Computer Services

I haven't been torrenting/kazaaing/etc recently, so I'm pretty sure they're not referring to me. Although the possibility remains that it's been the fault of late night battle.net-ing with Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. I'm not really sure, although I'm doubting how my pitiful 11mbps can clog up the network.

Anyways...such is life

Edit: I don't it's me, as I just tried playing some D2 and well, it was slow to say the least. I think, for the first time in history, the Computer Services folk have it right. I'm thinking someone either has a torrent running where they are mainly seeding (getting bombarded by tons of outside requests) or a similar thing with Kazaa or WinMX where they are sharing God and everything and have 80000000 million open slots. Needless to say, I'm a tad upset. *shakes his fist in anger and does his best Farva impersonation* Damn you burger punks!

at GMU they get kicked off for filesharing.. they can pinpoint the bandwidth hogs.

It seemed to me like they didn't have so much a problem with people downloading so much as with people uploading (after all, upload bandwidth tends to be much more limited tan DL bandwidth *glares at ISP*. Besides, blocking the 6881 ports will simply make people switch to a new one (yes, there'll be a percentage that won't know how to do that, but that's what geek friends are for).

Also, I wouldn't worry about D2 since most multiplayer games don't use much more than 4-10 kbp/s of upload (as opposed to file sharing which, if not limited, will suck up as much as possible).

But is it possible to simply block those outgoing bits? Or would that have an effect on downloading any information that goes through the same ports? I mean, the College's problem is simply with the effect the uploading is having on the network (as opposed to the content uploaded), then it needs to find a way that deals with uploads specifically.
